UNICEF Canada: Become a Rights Respecting School!
UNICEF Canada’s Rights Respecting School programme uses the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a basis for enhancing an inclusive, participatory and respectful school culture for children and adults.  As a framework for educational improvement, the model helps schools address the whole learning environment with a consistent rights-based approach.  The model is premised on the understanding that for children to want to achieve they have to feel included, that they belong and that they matter.  It brings children into early contact with the universal ideals of respect for oneself and for others, in the school community and in an interdependent world.

Potential Funding Support from the Commonwealth Foundation
OCIC members work in many Commonwealth countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific.

The Commonwealth Foundation was set up by Commonwealth governments in 1965, as an autonomous charitable trust (based in London, U.K.)  Besides funding of “interchanges” between professional organisations, the Foundation currently has funding priorities across four programmatic areas: Culture, Governance & Democracy, Human Development, and Communities & Livelihoods.

Its mission is to “strengthen civil society organisations across the Commonwealth as they promote democracy, advance sustainable development and foster inter-cultural understanding.”  "Commitment to diversity, development, democracy, good governance and human rights, all core Commonwealth values, help guide our work."

Funding support is available for initiatives such as raising skill levels, training workshops, and development of tools to assist civil society groups to help realize the challenges they face.

Visit the Foundation's website, http://www.commonwealthfoundation.com/, especially the links to information on "Areas of work", and "How we deliver".

For further information, one can sign up for occasional e-news updates (and join, free, "Friends of the Commonwealth", http://www.commonwealthfriends.org/).

OCIC members wishing additional insights and interpretation on potential support through the Commonwealth Foundation should contact the OCIC office. (We could refer you to a friend of OCIC who would be pleased to assist.)

GPPAC Mapping of Gender Expertise
In 2009, the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC), for which Peacebuild hosts the North American regional secretariat, appointed a designated Gender Liaison and decided to appoint Gender Focal Points in each region. In order to develop a more coherent gender mainstreaming strategy for GPPAC, we are carrying out a regional mapping of needs, activities, expertise and capacities on gender (related to peace and security issues) in each region. This particular mapping is for Canada.

The information will be used by GPPAC to analyze what kind of work is being done in the wider area of women, peace and security and where GPPAC should most usefully focus its work. The contact information may also be used for getting in touch with people holding a required expertise or interested in a particular subject matter.  For more information, contact Silke Reichrath, Regional Liaison Officer, GPPAC North America Peacebuild at prevention@peacebuild.ca

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, September 17, 2010. The winner will be announced at the beginning of November and presented at the WUSC Annual Assembly in Ottawa on November 5, 2010.
