Are you interested in making an impact on a global scale?

Heart Links Lazos de Corazón is recruiting a board chair who is committed to community, social justice and our global welfare.

Connecting local to global, Heart-Links works in solidarity with partner organizations in northern Peru as they address the root causes of poverty and social injustices in their communities. We finance and accompany initiatives in education, leadership training, women’s empowerment and health, among others. We also organize an annual trip to northern Peru for people who are interested in learning what it feels like to walk in solidarity with people from another part of the world.

Board profile:
• 7 to 10 community members
• One part-time staff (3 days a week)
• Governed by the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act

Duties:
• Call all board and executive committee meetings, set agendas and chair these meetings
• Call and chair AGM
• Ensure that all board positions are filled on an annual basis
• Orient new board members to the organization
• Provide oversight to staff and operations of the organization, including all HR considerations
• Alongside the treasurer, approve wire transfers and electronic payments such as payroll and credit card

A good chair should
• Provide vision and direction to the organization
• Keep on top of international development trends and help the board keep current too
• Understand the organization’s history and respect that history while planning for the future

Time commitment:
• 3-year term, renewable
• 5 board meetings a year (September, November, late January, March and June), typically on a Wednesday, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the AGM in May
• Monthly executive meetings (except in summertime)
• Average time commitment is 10 hours per month

What else we’re looking for:
• A commitment to social justice and international development
• Experience in any of the following areas: Law, Human Resources, International Development, Finance, Non-Profit Management
• Perspectives of grassroots, Indigenous, Latin American or educational communities
is a plus
• Previous board experience
• Knowledge of Spanish is an asset
