The Volunteer’s Role

We need your skills and experience to help with farmers market their goods, reduce post-harvest loses and strengthen the farming operations.

You will work closely with the project team in delivering short-term technical backstopping for improvements on the implementation of ongoing horticulture value chain projects.

You will develop the capacity of extension service providers, community volunteers and local partners/institutions to support the horticulture/agriculture initiatives. You will also provide recommendations to improve crop yield and plant growth and provide training based on identified gaps in the horticultural sector.

As a volunteer, you will:

-Provide technical support in setting up and managing up and managing greenhouse farms.

-Provide technical support to farmers on best horticultural practices.

-Contribute to develop innovative solutions and coordinate learning amongst those in horticultural sector.

-Support any other tasks to assist refugees in setting up and managing their horticultural businesses.

Essential Academic Qualifications:

– Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, agriculture or rural development related field.

Essential Professional Background:

– 2 – 4 years’ experience in Horticulture/Agriculture and/or small-scale farming

– Managerial skills, particularly in activity management, working with groups and teams of professionals, and liaising with government and non-government organizations

– Strong experience in end-market assessment & analysis

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Interim Deputy Director, reporting to the Project Director, will be responsible for the overall management of the technical functions of the project. S/he will manage national and international staff with technical roles. S/he will establish and maintain positive, collaborative and productive relationships with project staff, implementing partners, consortium partners, sector stakeholders and private sector actors.

EQWIP is building a team of energetic, skilled and passionate individuals who are motivated by the prospect of exploring new and creative approaches to solving complex global challenges.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide leadership and management for the technical delivery and oversight of EQWIP HUBS in Canada and in program countries;
• Manage technical leads in Livelihood & Innovation, L,M&E & Gender and other personnel assigned to the technical team including Program Advisors and Consultants;
• Provide strategic support to ensure that activities are meeting their goals and targets and recommend program adjustments when necessary to keep the project on track;
• Track and report progress and activities against annual and monthly work plans;
• Oversee program learning, monitoring and evaluation to ensure activities are meeting outcomes and aligned with youth and partner needs;
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of youth livelihood issues and a general understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing young people across countries of operation;
• Liaise and coordinate with technical consortium partners EDC, TIG, ACGC and UN-HABITAT to ensure effective implementation of activities;
• Liaise and coordinate with all EQWIP HUBS implementation teams and ensure consistent information, communication and collaboration between the technical team and other key functions within the project i.e. Talent Acquisition, Finance and Human Resources;
• Provide management and oversight of technical program delivery in particular with regarding coordination of activities in each country;
• Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws;
• Carry out management responsibilities including training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems; in accordance with projects policies and applicable laws; and,
• Perform other duties as requested by the Chief of Party and serve as Acting Chief of Party when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be eligible to work in Canada;
• University Degree preferred;
• 7-10 years of progressively responsible management and leadership experience at a director level;
• Long-term, overseas experience preferably with a focus on youth;
• Experience in the following technical areas: gender, environment, M&E and livelihoods as they relate to youth;
• A successful track record in supervising, designing, managing and implementing technical assistance for donor-funded projects and proven ability to develop and monitor work plans and training plans;
• Demonstrated mentoring abilities and experience supporting senior managerial staff;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; and,
• Fluency in English & French required, Spanish language skills are highly desirable.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Viamo (formerly know as VOTO Mobile) is a fast growing social enterprise with over 15 offices around the world including hub offices in Accra, Dakar and Mumbai. Our services help partners distribute and collect information by engaging difficult-to-reach populations through their mobile phones. We specialize in interactive voice calls (including IVR) and SMS in local languages, instantly reaching across distance and literacy barriers. We serve a wide variety of use-cases including under the broad themes of Data Collection and Behaviour Change Communication: journalists who run national public interest surveys, rural clinics who distribute maternal health education, policy makers who study vaccine supply chains, economic development organizations who reach out to farmers, urban planners who monitor water distribution access, and academics who research the effect of public health interventions.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Viamo has been relatively successful at convincing development organizations, one at a time, to consider mobile as part of their impact strategy. Over time, we have helped our partners implement hundreds of projects in over 100 countries and reached tens of millions of people. Viamo is excited to finally invest in documenting and learning from these stories, as well as sharing them with the development community.

The main activities in the role are:
– Call Viamo staff and Viamo partners to understand and document the impact of our work.
– Visit partner project sites to talk to end beneficiaries to understand and document the impact of our work.
– Develop an impact measurement framework that can be adapted to each type of project Viamo is engaged in.
– Write case studies about our work and impact in collaboration with our partners. Those should include as much evidence of impact as possible.
– Manage Viamo’s website and social media accounts. Try to get our impact stories published on relevant 3rd-party publications.
– Communicate our impact stories internally within Viamo to motivate our staff.
– Possibly create videos (with an agency?) to better explain what we do and/or showcase our projects.
– Possibly take high-quality pictures in a few project locations to enhance our communication materials.
– Support our staff with the creation of presentations or custom vase studies in the context of business development.

Deliverables:
– Three case studies per month published on our website.
– One white paper per quarter about how to maximize the impact of mobile engagement initiatives
-One mention of Viamo in a relevant 3rd party publication per quarter.-
– One internal video per month sharing an impact story with our staff.
– One/Two pieces of custom communication material as requested by a business development staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

– Excellent writing and oral communication skills (Bilingual English and French is an asset). Writing portfolio will be asked as part of the selection –
process.
– Experience with impact measurement in an international development context.
– Experience with business-to-business (enterprise) communication and marketing.
– Experience with video production, photography, graphic design, social media and presentations.

The Growing Nutrition for Mothers and Children (GROW) project in Ethiopia is an initiative to address undernutrition in women of reproductive age and children under five years of age. In Ethiopia, the project will be implemented in East and West Harar Administrative Zones of Oromia Regional State and in Gewane and Argoba Special Woredas of Afar Regional States.

As a Strategic Planning Officer you will work closely with Haramaya University College of Health and Medical Services. You will give support to the Ethiopia GROW team through researching the effectiveness of GROW program outcomes and the outcomes of Social Analysis and Action (SAA). Furthermore, you will advise team members about tools that will enable the sustainability of the project. Your role will be a key part of the project’s intermediate goal of improving proactive nutrition services for women and children in Ethiopia.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We are looking for someone who is highly-structured, process focused, customer oriented, responsive and flexible. The position strengthens the project’s capacity to respond efficiently and effectively to volunteer recruitment and placement. Reporting to the Project Director, based in Ottawa, the Talent Acquisition Team Leader will act as the interface between the external and internal operation of the team responsible for sourcing, screening, interviewing, assessing, selecting and orientation of young Canadian professional volunteers in order to meet the diverse professional requirements of the EQWIP HUBS project.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Working against weekly recruitment and placement targets, this position coordinates the necessary sales and customer service processes, including finance, administration and logistics related to all recruitment and placement functions
• Setting recruitment and placement targets; this position develops and monitors data analytics on a weekly, monthly and quarterly cycle. It provides analysis and recommends strategies and actions to the team and completes the analytical cycle by implementing the required strategy changes
• Working closely with the Finance & Administration team, the position assures the accurate financial recording and reconciliation on volunteer fundraising, contributed services, travel and volunteer tracking.
• Working closely with the Communications Team, the Team Leader collaborates on marketing and communications processes.
• Working closely with the Talent Acquisition team and Program team, the position provides leadership, under the direction of the Project Director, to volunteer orientation, pre-departure briefing and community engagement including other related activities.
• Working with Finance & Administration, Communications and Programs (as required) the position provides timely recommendations on business processes re-tooling and implements required changes in a timely and efficient manner with minimum business disruption.
• Supports Talent Acquisition activities by executing search strategies including networking, convening and hosting events and webinars, direct sourcing, social media, emails, referrals; to scale;

The Volunteer’s Role

The objective of this placement is to improve the quality of antenatal and postnatal care through the development of skilled professionals, increase the mentorship of health care units and professionals and decrease maternal and neonatal deaths

As a volunteer, you will:

– Conduct need assessments and build the capacity of teachers and students

– In collaboration with Pawe hospital management, design and deliver in-service trainings for the midwives and other relevant colleagues

– Plan and deliver coaching and mentoring to improve routine works as per the required standard practices

– Develop tools to improve identified gaps in provision of quality care and services; support promotion of professional ethics and devoted working culture in provision of quality care and services

– Participate in the planning and implementation of need based changes that brings improvement at the college system level

Essential Academic Qualifications:

MSc in Midwifery

Essential Professional Background:

– Minimum two years’ experience in teaching, mentoring, maternal and neonatal services
