“The Cut” – Film Screening at Toronto Black Film Festival

Event Details

We would like to share some information with OCIC members on a film screening at the upcoming Toronto Black Film Festival that has a special connection with Amref Health Africa.

“The Cut” is directed by Peter Wangugi Gitau, a filmmaker from Nairobi, Kenya who participated in Amref Health Africa’s Dagoretti Child Protection and Development Centre. The Centre works with children who live or work on the streets, providing them with access to health care, education, skills training and social support. In making the film, Peter Wangugi Gitau took a participatory approach. Children who attended the Dagoretti Child Protection and Development Centre wrote stories on the theme of child rights based on their own experiences. The stories formed the foundation of the script for “The Cut”. Most of the scenes in the film are drawn from real-life events shared by the children. Children from the Centre also had the opportunity to audition for roles in the film, and to take on technical roles, such as sound recording, special effects, make-up and production design.
