The goal of this workshop was to enable civil society organizations to improve the effectiveness and impact of your development initiatives by implementing a human rights-based approach (HRBA).

Workshop topics included:

  • What are human rights?
  • Human rights standards and instruments
  • Why it is important to address human rights in our development work
  • Identifying human rights issues
  • Elements of a human rights-based approach
  • Applying a human rights-based approach
  • Opportunities and Challenges
  • Developing your action plan

By the end of the workshop participants were be able to better integrate the elements of HRBA into their organizations’ projects and programs, and to share knowledge with peers and partners on how to integrate HRBA in their work.

Facilitator Bios:

Nazzari, Vincenza | Director of Education

Vincenza is the Director of Education and the International Human Rights Training Program. She leads the planning, and development of the curriculum for all Equitas human rights education programs as well as Equitas’ knowledge building and sharing strategy. Vincenza has participated in numerous international human rights education expert conferences organized by UNESCO, the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC) and the Council of Europe. Prior to joining Equitas in 1995, Vincenza worked as an educator and curriculum designer with the Public Service of Canada. She also worked as the official languages advisor at the Canadian Space Agency and the Federal Office of Regional Development (Québec). Vincenza holds an MA in educational technology from Concordia University, a joint Honors BA in Italian and Spanish from McGill University and a TESL certificate from Concordia University. She has done graduate studies in Italian literature and holds a diploma for teaching Italian from the University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy.

Vallée, Jean-Sébastien | Senior Education Specialist

Jean-Sébastien has worked at Equitas as an education specialist for the last 7 years. He worked on the implementation of the the Play it Fair! and the Speaking Rights program. He also worked on the program for the Middle East and North Africa for 5 years. He is now working on the International Human Rights Training Program. Prior to joining Equitas, he worked as a human rights educator at the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse du Québec. He was responsible for the design and development of pedagogical material for schools. He has a Master’s degree in Second-Language Education from McGill University and has taught at different levels.
