OCIC hosted a free, three-part capacity-building webinar series designed to improve your ability to demonstrate the impact of your work with renowned data illustration expert Ann K. Emery. The series covers topics such as using simple Excel tools for data analysis, data visualization planning and easy design tips for reports, social media, and dashboards, amongst others. This webinar was free and open to everyone, particularly monitoring and evaluation practitioners and development professionals.

Part 1: Data Analysis

Learn how to use Excel to quickly and easily summarize complex data. By the end of this webinar, you will be able to: do basic housekeeping in Excel, including freezing panes and renaming sheets; perform data cleaning and recoding, such as checking for missing data; generate descriptive statistics via pivot tables; and compile tabulated data to build appendices.

Part 2: Data Visualization

Learn how to plan and execute effective data visualizations, using tools you already use. By the end of this webinar you will be able to: identify target audiences and adapt to their needs, whether they are technical or non-technical; adjust the same data for multiple formats, including reports, slideshows and dashboards; use the storyboard technique to give engaging in-person presentations; and select the right type of chart for the data you want to illustrate.

Picking up from Part 2, this webinar covers best practices for data visualization design. By the end of this webinar, you will be able to: declutter your graphs by making simple tweaks to your computer’s default settings; write titles, subtitles and annotations; create effective labels that can be read in black and white as well as colour; create accessible designs for colour-blind audiences; and reinforce branding by adopting brand colours
