Security Workshops

OCIC offered two workshops in the area of Security, one focused on personal security from an individual perspective, and the other focused on organizational management of risks.

OCIC Personal Security Basics Workshop

Personal Security Basics was an intensive two-day module that incorporated the InterAction and worldwide standard approach to managing risks, with special emphasis on security within the development and humanitarian sectors. This workshop was ideal for Directors, Managers or Coordinators of development and humanitarian organizations, including volunteer-sending agencies, and individuals travelling and working overseas.

Issues covered included:
• Contingency Planning
• Vehicle Travel
• Urban Insecurity
• Incident Reporting and Incident Analysis
• Abduction
• Stress Management
• Risks, Threats and our Vulnerability
• Defusing Anger
• Sexual Violence
• Acceptance Strategy

At the end of the workshop participants were able to:
• Describe measures to reduce their vulnerability
• Understand their responsibilities
• Carry out a personal Context Assessment
• Complete incident reports
• Be aware of the dangers of minefields, cross fire, vehicle travel
• Understand different security strategies
• Understand the risks related to stress

Facilitator: OCIC Security Workshops were facilitated by Jeff Eames, Chair of TARA International in Canada. Jeff is an experienced and accredited trainer and independent consultant to development and humanitarian organizations, with over five decades’ experience.

TARA International is a not-for-profit association of international NGO trainers whose primary task is to deliver high quality training for humanitarian aid workers, government employees, staff from funding agencies, and personnel with an interest in the humanitarian sector. TARA training methodology identifies training needs and builds on the competencies and life experience of participants. The training is delivered using a variety of training methodologies, lectures, group work, presentations, participatory exercises, videos, case studies, role-play and focused discussion.

OCIC Security Management Systems Workshop

All agencies need to have good security management structures in place to be able to operate and respond in adverse and insecure environments.

Security Management Systems was an intensive one-day workshop that incorporated the InterAction and worldwide standard approach to managing security, with special emphasis on security within the development and humanitarian sector. This workshop was intended for Directors, Managers or Coordinators of development and humanitarian organizations, including volunteer-sending agencies.

Participants were introduced to generic security policies, standard operating procedures, incident reports, situation reports and contingency plans to ensure the best possible security system is in place to support all staff, interns and volunteers working for the organization.

• Security Policy Development
• Emergency Management Team (CMT)
• Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
• Pre-Departure Check List
• Contingency Plans
• Incident Reports
• Situation Reports
• Communications Flow Charts
• Communications Tree

At the end of the training participants were able to:
• Develop an agency security policy document
• Understand the structure and need for a Crisis Management Team
• Develop Standard Operating Procedures
• Ensure effective Contingency Plans are in place
• Understand the need to complete and analyse Incident Reports
• Assess security from Situation Reports
• Develop agency-specific response Flow Charts

Important to note: OCIC’s Personal Security Basics workshop was a prerequisite to this workshop, as it builds upon issues covered.
